The cheapest Austrian airport is the one closest to the trip—not always Vienna
A bargain trip to Austria could mean Vienna’s museums and urban vineyards, the Danube cycle path, Innsbruck or an Alpine ski resort. Those journeys should stay separate while their complete access costs are compared; a low Vienna fare is not automatically efficient for a traveller heading deep into Tyrol.
Vienna (VIE) offers the broadest network. Salzburg (SZG) and Innsbruck (INN) can remove a long rail or road transfer for the right region. For a ski week, bicycle trip or multi-city rail holiday, luggage and onward transport may outweigh a modest airfare difference.

Three-airport test
Price Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck only against a named final place
For central Vienna, VIE is usually the natural benchmark. For Tyrol, an INN arrival can save hours; for Salzburg and nearby regions, SZG may do the same. If a regional ticket connects through another hub, compare its protection and elapsed time with a nonstop to Vienna plus rail.
Write down the last train or resort transfer after the scheduled landing. A late arrival can force a hotel near the gateway, while an early departure can require an extra night. Those costs belong beside the fare.
Carry the holiday
Cheap ski and cycle fares often change once equipment is added
The Alpine content of the source makes baggage central. Read the exact sports-equipment dimensions, weight, reservation requirement and handling charge. A fare with a higher base price may include a checked item or provide a better disruption policy.
For the Passau-to-Vienna Danube route, compare bringing a bicycle with local hire and luggage transfer. Railway bicycle spaces can be limited. Buying the flight first and solving equipment later is the wrong order.
City value
Vienna’s palaces, museums and vineyards create different accommodation zones
A central stay can reduce daily transport for the Hofburg, major museums and historic streets. A room near an outer rail or Underground station may offer better value and easier access to vineyard districts. Price the travel pass only after mapping the actual days.
Event calendars matter. Opera, conferences, seasonal markets and festivals can tighten rooms without changing the flight. Shift dates only if the cultural reason for travelling can move too.

Compare Austria as a transport chain, not as a country label
Keep one VIE-based option and one relevant regional-airport option. Add equipment, rail, transfer, accommodation forced by the schedule and change conditions. This converts the promise of an easy cheap ticket into an evidence-based total.
