A low Lyon airfare has to beat the transfer and still leave time for the city
A cheap Lyon search can include low-cost airlines, direct flights, connections, schedules and flexible dates, but none provides a universal bargain window. The useful comparison combines the final ticket with LYS transport, accommodation geography and the places that make Lyon worth the journey.
Start with the final airline fare into LYS, including the bag and seat required. Then add the airport journey. Rhônexpress is fast and predictable; a current public-transport route may be cheaper but normally involves more time or a transfer. A bargain that arrives too late for the intended option may require a taxi, so arrival time is part of the price.

Compare the complete fare
Baggage and the LYS transfer can be larger than the difference between two tickets
Place every itinerary in the same basket: personal item, cabin bag, checked bag, seat needs, payment currency and airport transport. For a protected connection, note the total journey and rebooking terms. For separate tickets, add a recovery margin and the possible cost of a missed second flight.
Do not rank options until the landing time is tested against the official airport-to-city timetable. The nominally cheapest flight is poor value if it removes the public transfer or the first night’s check-in window.
Choose the right stop
Part-Dieu is a transport solution; it does not have to be the sightseeing base
A Part-Dieu stay can suit an early train, business trip or short regional connection. Presqu’île is more central for walking; Vieux Lyon brings historic atmosphere but can add cobbles and tourist pressure; Croix-Rousse adds slopes. Compare the room plus daily transit rather than assuming the lowest nightly rate wins.
Travellers continuing to Grenoble, Annecy, the Alps or another regional city should compare airport bus, airport TGV and central-station routes. The cheapest city-centre transfer may be unnecessary if the onward service leaves from LYS itself.
Use the city without overspending

Walk the Presqu’île, cross the Saône into Vieux Lyon and choose a viewpoint above the city. Add one museum or Roman-history visit that genuinely fits the day. This is more useful than buying a pass before deciding which institutions are open and interesting.
Food is not an optional theme in Lyon, but it need not mean a prestige reservation. Bakeries, markets, neighbourhood lunch menus and carefully selected bouchons can preserve the experience at several price levels.
Let evidence replace rules
Flexible-date comparison beats a universal weekday or six-week formula
Search the real route across nearby dates and airports, then compare like-for-like totals. Check the flight schedule by airline and departure point; if results name Ryanair, Wizz Air or another carrier, verify that it actually operates the intended date and airport.
Festivals, trade fairs, school holidays and route frequency can outweigh any general weekday pattern. A six-to-eight-week advance booking window is a testable option, not a guarantee of the lowest fare.
