The flight is only the first decision: choose your side of the Danube next
Budapest rewards travellers who make one useful choice before comparing tickets: decide whether daily life will centre on the hills of Buda or the denser streets of Pest. The Danube is not just scenery here. It divides the castle district and quieter western slopes from the Parliament, major museums, restaurants and nightlife on the eastern bank, so it also changes transfer times and the routes you will use each day.
Use that contrast to organise the stay: Parliament, the museum circuit and many evening districts are on the Pest side, while Castle Hill and its viewpoints rise in Buda. Chain Bridge is both a landmark and an orientation point, but the most convenient crossing and accommodation depend on the places planned for each day.

Choose a base
Buda is atmospheric; Pest usually reduces the daily transport bill
Buda makes sense when the Castle District, Fisherman’s Bastion, hillside views and quieter evenings are central to the trip. The trade-off is topography: slopes, steps and river crossings can turn a short map distance into a slower journey. Pest is usually the more convenient base for the Parliament area, the Jewish Quarter, the Great Market Hall, many ruin bars and the broad museum circuit around City Park.
A first visit does not require choosing one side exclusively. It does require checking the nearest bridge and public-transport stop before reserving a room. Chain Bridge is a landmark and a useful orientation point, but it is not the only crossing; the best route depends on the exact district and on any temporary transport changes.
From BUD
Match the airport transfer to the address, not to a generic ‘city centre’
All normal commercial arrivals use BUD, but central Budapest covers several districts. The direct airport service is convenient for parts of Pest, while the regular bus-and-metro network may be better for another address. An official taxi or door-to-door transfer becomes more attractive with several passengers, heavy luggage, a late arrival or accommodation on the Buda hills.
Check the live Budapest transport planner against the actual hotel entrance and landing time. A fare that arrives after the most convenient public connection has finished can cost more overall than a slightly dearer daytime flight. On departure day, allow for road traffic and the walk inside the terminal rather than timing the journey to the airport boundary.
Build the visit
Use the river, baths and museums as three different planning days
The Parliament and Danube embankments combine naturally with a river walk and one of the central bridges. The Castle District deserves its own slower half-day because the approach and viewpoints are part of the experience. Thermal baths are another separate decision: location, indoor and outdoor pools, session rules and advance-ticket policies differ, so choose the bath before building the rest of that day.
Museum names matter when planning the day: the Hungarian National Gallery is in Buda Castle, while the House of Terror examines the fascist and communist regimes at its Andrássy Avenue site. Opening days and timed-entry arrangements should be checked directly; Budapest museums do not all follow the same weekly pattern.

A cheap flight to Budapest must survive four real-cost checks
Compare the same baggage allowance, airport arrival hour and ticket flexibility across every option. Then add the transfer to the chosen side of the river. If a connection is involved, distinguish a protected itinerary on one ticket from a self-transfer that may require collecting baggage and passing security again.
- Price the airport journey for the scheduled hour, including a possible taxi after a late landing.
- Check whether cabin and checked baggage are included on every segment.
- Compare the cost of the room by district, not just the headline nightly rate.
- Leave enough time for a thermal-bath reservation, museum slot or fixed event that cannot move with a delayed flight.
