The island has one main air gateway, but four coasts with different weather and transfer times
Mauritius combines beaches, clear water, underwater life and cultural variety in stays that can work for families, adventure travellers and honeymooners. Island geography turns the flight into a very different holiday: a resort in the north, west, south or east can be a substantial road journey from the airport and face different conditions.
International visitors normally arrive through Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in the south-east. Once the flight is chosen, the meaningful comparison is transfer, coast, meal plan and the activities the traveller genuinely wants.

Choose the coast
North and west are not interchangeable with the windier east or the wilder south
The north offers a broad resort and restaurant choice around Grand Baie and neighbouring beaches. The west combines popular beaches with access toward Black River and Le Morne. The east has its own lagoon resorts and can feel more exposed to prevailing weather, while the south and south-east give easier access to a less resort-dense landscape and some airport-adjacent stays.
Do not choose by hotel photograph alone. Check swimming conditions, beach access, wind exposure, driving time and whether evenings will happen inside the resort or in a town. A lower room rate can be false economy when every activity needs a long private transfer.

The airport transfer is a substantial first and last journey
There is no island-wide rail system. A pre-arranged transfer removes uncertainty, taxis provide direct travel, and a rental car gives independence for a wider itinerary. Driving is on the left; road speed, congestion and unfamiliar routes mean map distance should not be read as an exact duration.
A late arrival may favour a simple first night or a confirmed transfer. On departure, leave margin for road conditions and the airport process. If a resort includes transport, ask whether it is private or shared and whether waiting time is likely.
Beyond the beach
Underwater life and mountain landscapes need different weather windows
Snorkelling and diving reveal Mauritius underwater, but reef condition, visibility, wind and operator standards vary. Use a licensed operator and do not assume every resort beach gives direct access to the same marine environment. Families and first-time divers need a different plan from experienced participants.
Le Morne’s landscape, Black River Gorges and the island’s cultural and food traditions give the trip more range than a resort-only stay. Port Louis supplies the urban counterpoint the source loosely described as skyscrapers, while markets, places of worship and communities across the island show a complex Mauritian identity.

Nine months ahead is not a fare rule; compare the same island product
Booking nine months in advance or targeting February or November does not guarantee a low fare. Track several dates, compare one-stop and nonstop options where available, and price baggage, seating, transfer and hotel meal plan together. Cyclone-season risk and ticket flexibility may matter more than a small saving.
