One airport serves the archipelago, but the right base changes the holiday
Malta is a sunny Mediterranean meeting point with three very different island experiences: Malta itself, slower Gozo and tiny Comino. Seafood, diving, climbing, cycling, nightlife, festivals and ancient history compete for limited trip time, while St Julian’s, St Paul’s Bay, Mellieħa and Valletta each create a different transport pattern.
Malta International Airport (MLA), historically associated with Luqa, is the country’s commercial air gateway. A hotel may be only a modest distance away on the map, yet traffic, bus routing and ferry connections can make the transfer longer than expected. Choose the base before judging a flight’s arrival time.

Valletta, St Julian’s and Mellieħa solve different problems
Valletta suits travellers who want historic streets, museums, harbour views and easy access to the Three Cities. St Julian’s and nearby Sliema place restaurants and nightlife closer, at the cost of a busier urban setting. St Paul’s Bay can work for northern excursions, while Mellieħa is better aligned with sandy-beach time and the onward route toward the Gozo ferry.
Gozo deserves more than an automatic day trip when walking, diving or village pace is central to the holiday. Staying there adds a ferry movement to both arrival and departure, so a very late incoming flight or very early outgoing one needs a deliberate solution.

Bus, taxi and transfer costs depend on the town, not the island’s size
Public buses connect the airport with multiple parts of Malta, but a direct-looking route may still take time in traffic and make intermediate stops. Taxis, app-based services and pre-arranged transfers are more direct. A rental car offers flexibility for dispersed sites but introduces left-side driving, parking pressure and narrow streets.
Price the return journey too. An inexpensive outbound bus is not relevant if the first flight home requires a taxi. Travellers continuing to Gozo should leave resilience for the land transfer and ferry rather than treating them as one guaranteed connection.
History and water
Balance the fortified cities with the coast instead of chasing every island in one day
Malta’s historic density supports focused days: Valletta and the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities, Mdina and Rabat, or the prehistoric temple sites. The source’s promise of ancient history becomes much more useful once each cluster has enough time and opening hours are checked.
Diving, swimming and boat outings are weather-dependent. Comino and the Blue Lagoon can be crowded, particularly in high season, so the timing and operator matter. Mellieħa’s beaches, Gozo’s coast and shore diving offer alternatives for travellers who do not need to compress the experience into one famous stop.

A Sicily connection is an itinerary, not a universal cheap-flight trick
Flying to Sicily and continuing by ferry can form a worthwhile two-place trip, but it is not an automatic saving: surface transfers, ferry schedule, baggage and an overnight can outweigh the fare difference. Compare it only when Sicily itself belongs in the plan.
