Four airport codes can appear beside Stockholm; only one choice fits every trip
A search for flights to Stockholm can return airport codes that lead to very different ground journeys. Arlanda is the main gateway, while Bromma, Skavsta and Västerås need route-specific checks. The practical question is not merely which ticket appears first, but which airport and transfer work for the district and arrival hour.
Arlanda (ARN) is the main international gateway. Bromma (BMA) is close to the city but has a more limited network. Skavsta (NYO) and Västerås (VST) can appear under the Stockholm label even though their surface transfers are much longer. The cheapest fare cannot be judged until that journey is priced and timed.

Arlanda connects by fast airport train, commuter rail, airport coach, taxi and other buses. They differ in price, frequency and final stop. Bromma’s short geographic distance can be useful when its limited route network matches the journey. Skavsta and Västerås should be treated as regional airports with planned surface legs, not as downtown terminals.
Swedish taxi fares are not regulated in the same way as a fixed public tariff, so compare the displayed price with a reputable operator before accepting a ride. For any airport, check whether the transfer still runs after the scheduled landing and whether a delay would force an alternative.
Choose a district
Central Station is convenient, but Stockholm’s character lives beyond Norrmalm
Norrmalm gives easy access to Stockholm Central and suits a short, transport-heavy stay. Gamla Stan places the old town outside the door but can mean cobbles, slopes and smaller rooms. Södermalm works for independent shops, viewpoints and evenings; Östermalm for a more polished central base; Djurgården for museums and green space, though not for every airport transfer.
Plot the hotel, one priority museum and one evening area. Stockholm is built across islands, so a straight map line can hide a bridge, ferry or interchange. Public transport makes the city manageable, but repeated cross-city trips still consume time.
Water-shaped city
Give Gamla Stan, Djurgården and the archipelago different scales of time
Gamla Stan is best explored slowly, with the Royal Palace area and narrow streets forming a coherent half-day rather than a photo stop. Djurgården groups several major museums and attractions, but their size means one or two are enough for a day. Ferry legs can be part of the urban route, not merely transport between sights.
The archipelago is a separate commitment. Boat duration and seasonal timetable determine what is realistic; a distant island is not an add-on to an already full city day. In winter, limited daylight changes the calculation, while summer brings longer days and stronger demand.
